Protein
Engineering: A Novel
Approach to Creating New Biomaterials,
Sarah
Heilshorn
Sarah Heilshorn, a graduate
student in Chemistry and Chemical
Engineering at Caltech,
presented this lecture as part of
the Everhart Lecture Series
on April 3, 2003. Cardiovascular
disease is a leading cause
of death in industrialized nations.
Currently, the most
commonly used materials for synthetic,
arterial bypasses do not
support cell growth, and often
fail within three years of
being implanted. In response,
protein engineering is
being used to design an optimum replacement
biomaterial.
