The Center for the Science and Engineering of Materials
(CSEM), established in September of 2000, addresses both
research and educational aspects of polymeric, structural,
photonic, and ferroelectric materials that will be necessary
to solve critical societal needs of the twenty-first century.
The Center pioneers a number of exotic and futuristic materials
and applications such as liquid metals, responsive gels,
and tiny medical sensors.
Congratulations to Mark Davis and Dave Tirrell who have been elected to the Institute of Medicine! This brings to three, including Frances Arnold, the number of Caltech faculty who are members of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.
Congratulations to William Chueh, former graduate student in Professor Haile's group, for his selection as a 2010 Truman Postdoctoral Fellow. The award was made on the basis of his exceptional contributions in the area of electrochemically active oxides with applications in sustainable energy. Read More...
Harry A. Atwater, Jr., Howard Hughes Professor and Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science, has been awarded the Fred Kavli Distinguished Lectureship in Nanoscience by the Materials Research Society. His lecture was entitled "Bending Light to Our Will: Nanophotonic Structures for Terawatt-Scale Solar Energy Conversion." Read More...
Congratulations to Andrew Jennings, graduate student in Professor Greer's group, who has received a 2010 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for his outstanding abilities and accomplishments, as well as his potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the U.S. science and engineering enterprise.
